Why my Company is named Agiliga

I have an identical twin brother called Oliver. He is a dermatopathologist in California. I am the younger twin. We studied at the same university, and one day a fellow student, who came from Nigeria, saw us together, and he stopped us and told us that in his language the older twin is called Onyeisi and the younger is called Agiliga. He also pointed out that Agiliga is a palindrome. I thought at the time that it was a great word for an identical twin: it is identical whichever of two ways you read it. So I said to myself "if I ever open up my own business then Agiliga will be the name I use"!! In the Nigerian language the first g is not pronounced as a j sound. Both g sounds are hard. So Agiliga is also a phonetic palindrome, which is rare.

Here we are in a picture taken when we were six years old. We were in our first year of school at Werneth Infant School in Oldham, which is now part of Greater Manchester, England. Notice the complete lack of ethnic diversity. In those days I and my brother were both called "Twinnie". My mother then knitted each of us a sweater with the letters O and D shown on the front of the sweaters. After that our classmates started to call us by our names Oliver and Douglas.

Our claim to fame in life is that I and my brother were delivered into this world in an emergency operation carried out by a gynecologist called Dr. Patrick Steptoe. He and an academic called Robert Edwards would later pioneer the first ever in vitro fertilization (IVF), leading to the birth in 1978 of Louise Brown in Oldham. This picture shows the two of them receiving an honorary degree for this achievement (Patrick Steptoe is without the hat). Robert Edwards later received the Nobel Prize for Medicine in 2010, but because Dr. Patrick Steptoe had died before this date he did not receive this honour. The Nobel committee cannot provide awards posthumously, but they said he would have received the award if he had been alive.
